10 THINGS YOU SHOULD HAVE WITH YOU ON A DAY HIKING TRIP

Soon it's time - your summer vacation in the Tyrolean mountains in the Stubaital is just around the corner. You pack your suitcase and take with you...? Good question actually! What belongs in a daypack for a trip to the mountains? We have created a packing list for you to check off with the most important things you need for a day trip with hiking on the Stubai Glacier.

1. THE RIGHT CLOTHING

According to the motto "there is no bad weather - there is only bad clothing", the right clothing is the basis of every hike. Depending on the weather and the conditions you should take with you:

  • A functional shirt (long and/or short)
  • Functional socks
  • Hiking boots
  • Hiking pants
  • Fleece jacket or sweater
  • Hardshell jacket
  • Softshell jacket
  • Cap
  • Headband
  • Gloves
  • Neckerchief/Bandana

The Stubai Glacier is located in high alpine terrain. Therefore, conditions can change very quickly. Accordingly, the more the merrier! Better have a little too much than too little.

2. A SUITABLE HIKING BACKPACK

For a day trip, backpacks with a volume between 15-30 liters are optimal. To ensure that your hiking backpack can be carried comfortably for several hours, it should be well padded on the shoulder straps and back. It is also important that it is made of water-repellent materials and is robust. So you are well equipped in any weather.

3. A FIRST AID KIT

A scratch, a graze or even a blister on your foot - when hiking, one or the other little injury can certainly occur. But also for larger emergencies, a first aid kit should always be with you on the mountain!

4. SUN PROTECTION

Especially on the glacier, the Colder temperatures mean that you perceive the sun's radiation less intensively and therefore unconsciously expose yourself to risk. For one thing, radiation increases with altitude. On the other hand, glaciers and snow reflect the radiation and amplify it by up to 100 percent. That's why sunscreen, sunglasses and headgear are essential items for your hike.

5. ENOUGH TO DRINK

At almost 3,000m, not only the hiking is strenuous, but also the altitude. To keep your body well supplied, we recommend taking at least 1.5 liters of water with you.

6. SNACKS

Even if the next hut doesn't seem far away, you should always have some snacks with you for refreshment. A few nuts, a bar or even a tasty cheese sandwich are great for mastering the last few meters of altitude.

7. HIKING MAP OR MOUNTAIN RAILWAY FOLDER SUMMER

In order to reach your destination safely, it is advisable to have a (digital) hiking map or our summer mountain railway folder in your backpack. Apps such as the Stubai Valley app can also be used to plan routes and determine your own location via GPS. Perfect for orientation!

8. ADJUSTABLE HIKING POLES

Hiking poles not only provide more safety and stability in the terrain, but also ensure an upright posture, better breathing and relieve muscles and joints. If you don't own any hiking poles yet, it's best to get advice from a professional in one of our local sports stores.

9. PERSONAL DOCUMENTS AND MONEY

Whether it's for a cold drink at the Dresdner Hütte or for the entrance coin to the ice grotto - some cash never hurts when hiking. In addition, it is always good to have your ID, insurance card, etc. ready.

10. A SMARTPHONE

Important in the alpine terrain is also a charged cell phone including all emergency contacts to be prepared for emergencies. But not only that - with the breathtaking panorama, it's worth taking a photo or two and sharing them with your loved ones.
