Rescue exercise on the Stubai Glacier

Fire brigade evacuates people from the gondola during the exercise drill

On 18 June 2022 a large-scale rescue exercise took place on the Stubai Glacier. Under the motto “well-equipped for an emergency”, around 130 people of the Stubaier Gletscherbahnen lifts, the Neustift mountain rescue service, the voluntary fire brigade of Neustift and the Innsbruck Land rescue services took part in the exercise with full commitment and trained for the case of emergency.

The training scenario: fire in the Gamsgartenbahn valley station.

Around 15 people were trapped in the 6-seater cabins of the Gamsgarten gondola lift and had to be evacuated and roped down from a height of around ten metres. In addition, several injured people were rescued from the valley station and treated. After about 1.5 hours all passengers were rescued and the extinction of the fire could be announced.

The cooperation of our employees with the Neustift mountain rescue team, the Neustift voluntary fire brigade and the rescue services of Innsbruck Land worked flawlessly. “It is important to practise the rescue procedures and the interaction of the emergency services at regular intervals in order to be prepared for a real emergency,” reports Georg Strickner, head on the lift department on the Stubaier Gletscherbahnen.

During the subsequent debriefing, all participants were satisfied with the course of the exercise. All those involved in the exercise were then invited to let the day come to an end at a cosy BBQ party.
