Spring Sessions in the Snowpark Stubai Zoo

Snowboarder springt über Kicker bei den Spring Sessions im Stubai Zoo 2022

It's time again: The Spring Sessions at the Stubai Glacier from 02 April to 08 May 2022 are just around the corner.

The Snowpark Stubai Zoo at the Stubai Glacier has developed into one of the TOP addresses for top-class freestyle fun in the last decades. The reason for this is on the one hand the extraordinary location with all-day sunlight as well as various international events: the FIS Stubai Freeski Worldcup, the Stubai Prime Park Sessions, which are already celebrating their tenth anniversary in the Stubai next season or the Stubai Premiere as season opening.

However, the main reason for the popularity of the snowpark is without a doubt the snow reliability at the Stubai Glacier and the always perfectly shaped set-up from Schneestern. The snowpark builders from Kempten recognize the trends in winter as well as summer sports and have been a reliable partner in terms of snowpark on the Stubai Glacier from the very beginning. Thus, concepts were jointly developed and realized, which enjoy great popularity in the freestyle scene.

The latest coup is the new jibline on Gaiskarferner with its own lift, the Zoo Shuttle. Here, snowboarders and freeskiers, who manly use rails and jibobstacles, will now find numerous features to try out and perfect their tricks.

What makes the Snowpark Stubai Zoo at Gaiskarferner special?

What is important when building a snowpark? We talked to Nejc Kralj from Schneestern, technical manager at the Stubai Zoo project, and he told us a few interesting facts:

What is important when building a snowpark?

First and foremost, it depends on the target group for which the snowpark is to be built. Should it be a simple set-up for beginners, a snowpark of medium difficulty for amateurs or a pro set-up for very good riders. Then we look with park designers what is feasible in the terrain that is available. We gather ideas and make some suggestions to the client. After coordinating with all the decision makers and setting a schedule, we get going and start taking the plan from paper to snow.

Since creative set-ups are also very appealing to us, we also offer special set-ups for TOP riders, such as for the Stubai Prime Park Sessions. The set-ups at various international events such as The Nines, Red Bull Superskicross, Slopestyle course at the Olympic Games, various World Cup set-ups also come from Schneestern.

What makes the Stubai Zoo so special?

There are a few factors that make the Stubai Zoo unique. On the one hand, it's the south-eastern location and the all-day sunshine from autumn to spring. The sun makes the landings soft, the jumps stay hard. For the athletes, that coupled with the breathtaking panorama is the best thing that can happen.

The extensive set-up is another plus point of the snowpark at Stubai Glacier. It starts with small 2m jumps and beginner boxes and leads to big 19m jumps and doublekinked rails.

What I personally like most about the Stubai Zoo is that riders of all levels, from beginners to Olympic champions, world champions, etc. ride in the same snowpark and share the same lift. This often creates great situations where, for example, a newcomer meets his idol at the lift and has the chance to get valuable tips. This is incredibly inspiring and the Stubai Zoo Spirit is a very special one.

What makes a good kicker?

There are three things:

  1. Inrun
  2. Transition
  3. Landing

The inrun should be designed to give you enough speed for the jump itself. The landing should be safe and steep enough and during the jump it is important to have a comfortable transition that does not catapult you abruptly into the air.

Which rails/boxes are suitable for whom?

At Schneestern there are countless rails and boxes - actually we build almost everything you can imagine: from straight rails or rainbow boxes to kinked rails with one or more kinks in them, curved c-rails, etc.. There are almost no limits to your imagination.

For beginners, straight boxes are best, where you can test how it feels to slide on plastic. These are wide and not too high and are therefore relatively safe. The jumps here are also built to be suitable for beginners. When you then feel safe, you can try other shapes. In the Stubai Zoo, there are six different objects in the winter park, which provides a reduced set-up, where there is something for everyone. In spring and autumn there are more than 20 jib obstacles.

Thank you Nejc for taking the time to answer a few questions for us and for creating a dreamlike playground for freeskiers and snowboarders year after year with your team at the Stubai Glacier. We wish you and the Stubai Zoo a great spring season and continued success with your numerous projects.

The Schneestern company from Kempten produces obstacles and builds snowparks all over the world. In summer, the team is dedicated to building mountain bike setups and pump tracks.
